The independent boutiques of Holland Park

4.04.2024

Words by Jake Russell

In the second of a new series of area guides from Russell Simpson, we introduce you to the best shops, restaurants and attractions in the neighbourhoods where we work. This time we look at Holland Park and our favourite destinations in this prestigious address.

Daunt Books

This is a bookshop for travellers, with a range of fiction and non-fiction arranged by country. From travel books to novels in translation, it’s perfect place to pick up some reading material for your next holiday. The original Daunt’s can be found in Marylebone, but their Holland Park store is one of the most popular, with enthusiastic assistants and a beautiful space.

Supermarket of Dreams

This contemporary food shop describes itself as a ‘gourmet grocer.’ As well as selling a wide selection of vegetables, meat and cheese, in the evenings it becomes a stylish sushi bar called Izakaya Nights. The interiors are all glass, metal, dark surfaces and moody lighting, which gives the whole place a funky space-age feel.

Unico Gelato

Elena Manfroni, the founder of Unico Gelato, is the granddaughter of the man who designed Italy’s most popular gelato machine. Originating from Bologna, Italy’s capital of food, this is a family-run shop offering hand-made ice cream. Alongside the traditional flavours are various Italian specialities: we recommend Crema Bologna and Sicilian lemon zest.

La Piccola Deli

A cosy little deli serving coffee, pastries, and fresh sandwiches on a quiet side street off Holland Park Avenue. They also sell a range of artisanal food and wine – and an amazing selection of cheeses – with knowledgeable staff keen to share their love of Italian products. Why not try the maritozzi, an iconic Roman recipe, consisting of brioche buns filled with cream or custard?

Bursting Buds

This is one of West London’s most established florists, with over 30 years’ experience. The team pride themselves on their beautiful bouquets and flower arrangements, which can also be ordered for weddings and celebrations. Their selection is seasonal and includes English staples like peonies and anemones, as well as Dutch delights like tulips and purple heather.

Hop Like a Bunny

This charming little boutique offers clothes, toys and gifts for babies and children. Started in 2009, the shop has become popular with parents throughout the neighbourhood. It stocks a wide range of brands, with an emphasis on designers who use natural fabrics and work in eco-friendly environments.

Myriad Antiques

Founded back in the Sixties, this is one of West London’s favourite antique shops. As well as a dazzling mix of furniture, furnishings and pictures, there are also numerous garden accessories for sale. Described as ‘an eclectic muddle of beautiful things’, inside you are bound to find a unique item for your home.
