The most beautiful shopping street in Belgravia
4.12.2024
Words by Ed Woolgar
In the next area guide from Russell Simpson, we introduce you to the best shops, restaurants and attractions in the neighbourhoods where we work. This time we look at Elizabeth Street.
Elizabeth Street
If you step off the train at Victoria Station and walk through the crowd surrounding the coach stop, you will discover one of Belgravia’s most beautiful streets. Connecting Eaton Square with Buckingham Palace Road, Elizabeth Street is lined with a wonderful mix of restaurants and shops.
The street is famed for the floral displays that decorate many of these retailers. It’s also known for the bright pink façade of Peggy Porschen Cakes – one of the more 'Instagrammed' addresses in south-west London. But there’s plenty more to discover on this charming street, so here are five of our favourite spots.
Poilâne
46 Elizabeth Street
The first branch of this bakery opened in Paris in 1932, selling traditional country breads. Since then it has become a much-loved French institution, which is still owned by the same family. Everything here is baked daily onsite, with sourdough loaf and walnut bread always selling well. Their pastries are also worth trying, as well as the beautiful brioche loaves that line the shelves.
Mungo & Maud
79 Elizabeth Street
This upmarket pet shop opened in May 2005. Husband and wife team Michael and Nicola Sacher wanted to offer stylish, design-led accessories for owners of dogs and cats. This includes hand-stitched leather collars, quilted winter coats, and even cashmere pullovers. And much of the collection comes in miniature sizes: perfect for the new puppy in your life. Their social media feed is also filled with delightful doggie pics.
Philip Treacy
69 Elizabeth Street
One of the world’s most in-demand hat designers, the Irish milliner Philip Treacy’s headwear is popular with European aristocrats and Hollywood royalty. Although his designs are available in a number of upmarket shops, the best place to try them is his Belgravia boutique on Elizabeth Street. Inside you will find a magical range of haute couture hats and original fascinators in vibrant colours and beautiful patterns.
Oliveto
61 Elizabeth Street
In November 1990, Mauro Sanna founded Olivo, a restaurant specialising in Sardinian cuisine. The restaurant was so popular that a few years later he opened Oliveto, which served more informal Italian dishes. This includes pizza, pasta, meat and fish, making it a favourite place for locals to have lunch or a casual evening meal. And, if you enjoy the menu, why not visit Olivino Deli on Lower Belgrave Street, to take home your own selection of Sardinian specialities.
Amie Wine Studio
13 Eccleston Yards
Eccleston Yards was once an overlooked collection of former industrial buildings. Now, it has been carefully redeveloped by the Grosvenor Estate to create a mix of offices, retail and restaurant spaces. Here you will find fitness classes, wellness studios, beauty stylists and even a pottery workshop offering regular beginner’s classes. But we recommend you visit Amie Wine Studio: a bar, wine shop and art gallery with beautiful interiors. It’s run by the husband and wife team of Will Sandbach and Abbie Roden Sandbach, and regularly hosts tastings, exhibitions and even supper clubs.
